Surfing Mawi
Mawi is a left-hand reef break at the end of a rough track past Selong Belanak. It is fast, hollow and shallow, and it works best on a low to mid tide with a solid south-west swell and the dry-season south-east trades blowing offshore. There is also a shorter right off the same peak. Not a beginner wave: strong currents, sharp reef, a crowd of good surfers on a good day.
The track
The last kilometre is a rutted dirt road that turns to mud in the wet season. Our SUVs handle it; a scooter with a board often does not. This is the trip where a driver earns their money.
Timing
Leave Kuta by 5.30 am. The wind usually turns onshore by late morning.

Good to know
Is Mawi suitable for intermediates?
Only on small days. It is a powerful, shallow reef break and the locals surf it hard. Selong Belanak, ten minutes back, is the alternative.
Can a normal car reach Mawi?
The last stretch is rough dirt. Our drivers know it and choose the right car; after heavy rain we may drop you at the top of the track.
