The best beaches in South Lombok
We drive to these beaches every week. Here is how they compare for swimming, surfing, kids, food and photos, and how long it takes to get to each from Kuta.

Tanjung Aan (15 min)
Two crescents of white sand either side of a rocky point, with Bukit Merese rising behind. The east bay is flat and shallow, perfect for swimming and kids; the west bay has small waves. Warungs, sunbeds, coconuts. Busy on weekends. Go early or for sunset.
Mawun (25 min)
A perfect horseshoe between two headlands. Calm turquoise water on the eastern side, gentle surf on the western, few facilities beyond a couple of warungs. Our pick for a swim day. Bring snorkel gear.
Selong Belanak (40 min)
Long, white and shallow with soft rolling waves: the beginner surf beach, with schools, board hire, beach clubs and a row of warungs. Buffalo herds cross the beach late afternoon. Great for groups with mixed interests.
Are Guling (25 min)
A quieter bay with a reef break at each end and calm water in between. Good snorkelling on a flat day, one or two warungs. Less developed than its neighbours.
Gerupuk (15 min)
Not a beach for swimming (it is a working fishing bay with lobster farms) but the best surf hub in the south, with boats to four breaks and a village full of surf camps and cafes.
Seger (10 min)
Right next to the Mandalika circuit: a small bay with a hill to climb for sunrise, the Princess Mandalika statue and a decent right-hander. Quick and close.
Mawi (35 min)
A rough track leads to a wild, beautiful bay with a heavy left-hand reef break. Strong currents; not a swimming beach. Worth the trip for the scenery and to watch good surfers.
Pink Beach / Tangsi (2 h 15 min)
Pink-tinged sand from crushed coral, on the remote south-east peninsula. A full-day trip with a snorkelling boat to Gili Petelu. Quiet, basic facilities, spectacular. See the Pink Beach tour.
Ekas (1 h + boat)
A vast bay reached by boat from Awang, with two excellent waves and cliff-top lodges. For surfers and people who like being far from everything.
Practical notes
- Beach entrance/parking is IDR 10,000–20,000 per car at most beaches, paid to the village.
- Shade is scarce; bring a hat and reef-safe sunscreen.
- Sea urchins live on the reef flats at Tanjung Aan and Are Guling; wear booties or swim over sand.
- Weekdays are quiet everywhere. Sundays bring families from Mataram.
